Nine Inducted into National Honor Society

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony
By Guadalupe Mendez

On Thursday, October 2, 2014, nine cadets were recognized for meeting the standards of National Honor Society. LTC Joe Aull started the ceremony with a prayer, followed by CPT Jay Robbins singing the National Anthem. Captain Marjorie Griffin, sponsor of NHS at Wentworth, explained the qualifications to be in National Honor Society which are character, scholarship, leadership and service.
The candle lighting ceremony began with CPT Griffin lighting the white candle, which represents knowledge.  Chapter Secretary Guadalupe Mendez then lit the yellow candle, representing scholarship, a commitment to learning, meaning that the student spends hours studying to get the best possible grades.  Chapter President Anastasia McElroy lights the red candle representing service.  Service means helping others without being recognized for it, usually through community service or service to the school.  Cadet Mendez then lights the purple candle representing leadership, taking an initiative in class and school activities.  Cadet McElroy ended by lighting the green candle which represents character, one’s individuality which distinguishes them from others.
After all of the candles were lit, the new inductees came to the stage, signed their names on the Honor Society Membership roll, & received their pin and their certificate. Then the inductees, along with lifetime NHS members in the audience, recited the pledge of the Honor Society.

Congratulations to all NHS Members!!
