Ping Pong Tournament Down to Final Four

Captain Bob Brock has taught at Wentworth Military Academy for 8 years. He is the Academy’s art instructor. During his 4th year of teaching here, he started the Ping Pong Tournament. “This tournament actually started out as an art project,” he explained. “My art students designed a Ping Pong table for a project and then they started playing. They enjoyed it so much that I decided to create a tournament.”

Compared to the first year CPT Brock did this tournament, there has been a lot more people participating this time around. “The first year I did this there were probably about 80 that signed up and this year we have 111. I’m so surprised. I don’t think there has ever been a school event where this many people have voluntarily signed up,” Brock said.

The winners of this tournament win a pizza. “I’m hoping that in the future, I will be able to get the winners a nicer prize. But for right now, I order the winning cadets pizza. I will also be hosting this tournament again in the spring, if everything goes well.” said CPT Brock.

One of the cadets that signed up for the tournament, Cadet Justin House, said, “I signed up because Captain Brock is a nice guy and ping pong is a lot of fun. This would definitely be something I sign up for again in the future. I enjoy it, it helps pass the time and it’s a Wentworth activity.” However, other cadets have different reasoning for wanting to participate. “I’m just here for the pizza,” joked Cadet Max Flores.

The tournament is down to the final four. They are Michelle Zhan, Ethan Salatielu, Dan McElroy, and Angel Perez Vargas. The winners of the Zhan-Salatielu and McElroy-Perez Vargas matches will go on to the championship round. The final matches will be played after CPT Brock gets his new Ping Pong tables in. “I would like to temporarily set them up in a location so people can view the last few matches,” he explained.

Smile!! It's Time for Fall Photo Shoot

We will be taking our school portraits on October 20 and 21. Each cadet will have an individual portrait. Cadets will sign a requisition for their packet of portrait which will include 1 8x10, 2 5x7s, and 8 wallets. The cost of the packet is $35. The portraits will be delivered to the cadet before they depart for Christmas Break.

Coming Home for Homecoming

Homecoming Weekend

Homecoming was a huge success. The talent show went well on Friday, and everyone enjoyed seeing their peers’ talents. The cadets sang, danced, acted and played instruments. Wentworth has a lot of talent!!

The next morning the HS Volleyball team joined in running the 5k with other cadets and civilians. It was a struggle for some due to the cold, but a great success. Their coach trained them well. Many received medals for their achievement.

The first Dragon Festival took place in the field house on Saturday morning. Children, cadets, and even adults, enjoyed the games, bouncy house and slide, popcorn, sno-cones, cotton candy, and various craft-making tables.

That afternoon, the Homecoming Parade took place through the streets of downtown Lexington. Not only did the Corps of Cadets participate, but also the Old Boys from the 90’s. The Homecoming Queen, Cadet Lexus Wells, and Princesses, Cadets Hailey Long and Guadalupe Mendez, rode on their float and waved to the crowd. The parade was something that everyone was proud of, since cadets and everyone who participated did such a good job.

The soccer team was victorious in its first Homecoming game. The first half ended with the Dragons leading 4-0 and they finished strong winning 7-1. Everyone was excited for the team and cheered them on. The soccer team worked hard as a team and I believe they deserved this win.

Sunday morning, Wentworth had a Memorial Ceremony, which took place in the chapel due to weather conditions. The ceremony was inspirational and was finished singing the Wentworth song. After the Memorial Ceremony, cadets did a Pass in Review Parade. The alumni finished the day doing the flag ceremony. According to the Commandant, the parade was a success and so was Homecoming in general. The alumni that came home were happy and so were the Corps of Cadets.

Many events took place over the weekend and these are just a few that were enjoyed by all.

Homecoming 2014 - A Fresh Take on an Old Favorite

With Homecoming less than a month away, plans are in full swing and the Wentworth staff is working to put the finishing touches on a Homecoming celebration that is sure to provide something for everyone! The Wentworth campus will soon welcome home alumni from around the country and extend the opportunity for them to reconnect, share memories and celebrate Homecoming with the 135^th Corps of Cadets through honored traditions such as Lunch with the Corps and the Memorial Ceremony/Dress Parade.

In addition to these traditional favorites, Homecoming 2014 will also introduce new events and a focus on family-centered fun for alumni who wish to share their dragon spirit with children and grandchildren. Festivities will include the First Annual Dragon Den Festival, a carnival atmosphere packed with games, food and fun for Dragons of all ages.

A Saturday afternoon reception honoring Wentworth's supporters is another new feature. Those alumni who have earned Red Coats through the Century Club program are being encouraged to wear them to the reception and Alumni Dinner on Saturday evening. It's a visible sign of the support that today's cadets receive from those who have preceded them.

Homecoming 2014 will kick off on Friday, October 10 with the Alumni Golf Tournament and Lunch with the Corp. Festivities will run through Sunday, October 12 and wrap up with a brunch following the Memorial Ceremony/Dress Parade and Alumni Flag Ceremony. This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Veterans” lending itself to a weekend packed full of opportunities to salute all those who have served our country.
